What is there to say about Three Eighty-Eight?
We recorded this record in June 2025 at our engineer Dave's home studio in Altadena, CA.
At the beginning of 2025, Altadena and several other neighborhoods in Los Angeles were hit with devastating fires.
Altadena got it the worst, with over 9,000 homes destroyed.
The Eaton Fire in Altadena would become the fifth-deadliest and second-most destructive fire in California history.
Dave was one of the lucky few whose home was untouched by the fire.
Dave's brother-in-law, however, was not so lucky, and tragically, his family's home burned down.
After we wrapped recording, Dave drove us through some of the neighborhoods the fire tore through.
It was a dark scene.
Whole neighborhoods were leveled.
The foundations of homes poked out of the dry, burnt grass like bones.
At his brother-in-law's house, all that remained was the stone and metal gate at the front of the property and the mailbox at the start of the driveway.
We took a picture of the house number:
There was something cosmic about recording this record.
A true "I'm right where I'm supposed to be."
It was written and recorded in eight days.
Eight songs.
Eight days.
Eight tracks on the tape machine.
It was recorded by a band redefining itself in a city rebuilding itself from the ground up.
And at the time, there was so much uncertainty in our lives.
We went into the experience with all our questions unanswered.
And the recording and writing happened so fast, there was no time to second-guess ourselves.
We had to trust our gut.
And I think that was actually helpful for us.
At a time when there was so much uncertainty in our lives, we pulled together, trusted ourselves and each other, and funneled all those feelings into the art of making this record.
And we pulled off something we'd never done before.
We recorded a whole album to tape.
We wrote and recorded the whole thing in eight days, with no overdubs.
Recording Three Eighty-Eight didn't answer any of our questions, but it gave us the confidence to keep going. To finish the next record.
I think that was a really important moment.
I don't know what will happen to the city of Altadena.
I've heard rumors they're going to turn it into a smart city (whatever the heck that means), but in reality, I question how many people will return to rebuild their homes.
Some of those neighborhoods might have vacant lots for decades.
But I will say, the resilience of the people was inspiring.
Many people moved campers onto their property, living in them with their families as they rebuilt their homes.
Sometimes, I suppose, despite all the unanswered questions you may have, you still have to show up, trust your gut, and rebuild.
