POOR, POOR FISH :: LYRICS

A bum and a bucket of concrete
beneath a crack in the slabs of the
Gotham-grey freeway;
where have I found myself?

Friends in far places,
scroll through pictures of faces.
Huh, they all have some ends now,
these pictures don’t look like my friends somehow,

Oh.
There I go again,
I can’t shake the grim:
critical and filled to the brim.

Missing the sea cliffs
I bought a couple of small fish
but a week and they’d got in a big fight.
One tore the other to bits.

Poor, poor fish.
Must it always come down to this?
This fight to exist,
must it always come down to this?

But there I go again,
can’t shake the grim:
critical and filled to the brim.
But then again . . .
then again . . .

Poor poor poor poor . . .

THE STORY OF A FISH.

From Casey:

“When we moved to LA, we bought a little red fish.

We named him Chippy, and, at the recommendation of the local aquarium store owner, put him in a tank with a couple recommended fish species.

Bettas are notoriously bad roommates.

Several months later, we woke up to Chippy in an otherwise-empty tank, burping, with a toothpick in his mouth. Chippy, it turned out, was an extra-bad roommate—but also, as it happens, quite a survivor.

He lived for years, through multiple apartments, band name iterations, presidents, tanks (last, an old, gutted, analog tv) . . . then, on April 14th, 2018, Chippy passed away.

Here’s to a couple of permanent reminders . . .
Even though we love and miss Chippy, his lonesome life made us realize that there’s even empathy to be had for cannibals.

The narrator in Pale King, similarly, finds himself with a cannibal fish, which he finds tragic: just like us, he thinks, even pet fish have been shaped by things to be in a constant state of competition.
