a song about :: giving up, growing pot, drinking, being trapped, letting go, tall cans, unhappiness.

"I am a caught-fish in a fishing net, does smoker's halitosis breath impress you?"

“The Loser”
Written & Performed by Under The Rug
Produced by The Rug Factory Recording
Mixed/Master by The Rug Factory and Ross Pitto

THE LOSER:: LYRICS

There’s a pot plant on the window sill
seed must have fell into the succulent plant,
it shivers when the wind blows;
when the wind blows it drops dead leaves on the sill.

I know how it got away,
though I never really had it;
it’s my fault, but all the same,
that doesn’t mitigate the pain.

There is a tallcan on the balcony.
It’s filled up to the brim,
expired butts of cigarettes.
I am a caught-fish in a fishing net.
Does smoker’s halitosis breath
does that impress you?

I know how it got away,
though I never really had it.
Sure, my fault, but all the same,
doesn’t mitigate the pain.

THE ORIGINAL DEMO CUT

Like Call Center Blues, we recorded this apartment-produced version before tracking it in-studio for Pale King. Considering the movie samples we used, it was a risk to try and sell it, but we wanted to let the folks who are following this Launch Experience hear how the song evolved.

THREE LOSER-EY POEMS

At one point, our plan was to release a “Loser” album, which, more or less, followed a woe-is-me do-nothing.

Often, Casey will write some phone notepad poems around a subject before we start putting words to music. Find below a few of the poems that didn’t make it into the song.
